International Museum Day

So that the world knows. So that memory endures.

International Museum Day
On Saturday, 16 May 2026, the Museum and Memorial in Sobibór once again took part in the celebrations of International Museum Day. On this occasion, visitors had the opportunity to join a free guided tour.

Understanding history together

During the tour, participants explored the history of the camp, which was one of the main extermination centres established by the Germans as part of Operation "Reinhardt" between 1942 and 1943.

The guide also addressed the fate of the victims and the accounts of the survivors who, after the war, testified to the crimes committed at the German extermination camp in Sobibor. The tour also provided an opportunity to present the process of creating the new memorial and the permanent museum exhibition, as well as to discuss the results of archaeological research and the idea of preserving the authentic character of the memorial site

May the memory endure

International Museum Day is an initiative of the International Council of Museums, aimed at emphasising the role of museums in protecting cultural heritage and fostering historical awareness. The celebrations organised at the Museum and Memorial in Sobibór served as an important reminder of the need to preserve the memory of the victims of the German death camp.

We thank all participants for joining us and invite you to attend future events organised by the Museum and Memorial in Sobibór.

"Those of you who survive, should bear witness to this. Let the world know what happened here." – Alexander Pechersky, one of the leaders of the prisoner uprising at the German death camp in Sobibór.
