The concept of International Museum Day

International Museum Day is an annual event celebrated on 18 May, established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums, which operates under UNESCO.

On this day, exhibitions, seminars, meetings, and open days are organised worldwide. These events provide an excellent opportunity to showcase the work of museums and highlight their important role in social and cultural life.

Our initiatives

The Museum and Memorial in Sobibór participates in these celebrations every year, undertaking activities to present the history of the German death camp SS-Sonderkommando Sobibor, commemorate its victims, and discuss the symbolism of the present-day memorial. The guided tour also offers an opportunity to learn about the tragic history of the region, closely linked to the implementation of Operation Reinhardt.

This year, the guided tour of the Museum and Memorial in Sobibór, organised as part of International Museum Day, will take place on 16 May 2026 (Saturday) at 11:00 a.m. The guided tour is available only in Polish.
