Protection of mass graves in Sobibór

On the grounds of the former German death camp in Sobibór the work on the protection of mass graves containing ashes of the camp victims has finished. It was the first phase of the international project to create the Museum – Memorial Site in Sobibór.

Dignified commemoration and proper protection of mass graves is the most important part of the concept to create a new museum. In accordance with the architectural and artistic project by a team of architects – Marcin Urbanek, Piotr Michalewicz, Łukasz Mieszkowski and Mateusz Tański – the mass graves were covered with geotextiles and a layer of white marble aggregates. The work was carried out under the supervision of the Rabbinical Commission for Jewish Cemeteries.

The next construction work to be implemented in 2017 is related to the erection of an exhibition building.
