NEARLY 40,000 VISITORS IN THE MUSEUM AND MEMORIAL IN SOBIBÓR – A SUMMARY OF EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
2021 was marked by numerous educational events and projects based on the exhibitions displayed in the Museum and Memorial in Sobibór.
The employees of the Museum and Memorial in Sobibór conducted a number of museum lessons (in the remote form through MS Teams and Zoom platforms) attended by the students of primary and secondary schools from the Włodawa County, Chełm, Zamość, Bydgoszcz, and Pruszków. Our aim was to e.g., familiarise the participants with the history of the Jewish community in Włodawa and the German extermination camp in Sobibór.
Moreover, the Museum and Memorial in Sobibór, in cooperation with the Museum – Synagogue Complex in Włodawa organised the educational project of workshops entitled “Włodawa-Sobibór. Memorial and Education” which attracted nearly 150 students from schools of the Włodawa County. A similar form was implemented during the visits of students from 8th grade of the primary school in Wojcieszków(near Łuków) and the university students from Germany.
One of the most important events organised by the State Museum at Majdanek with the Museum and Memorial in Sobibór was the international educational seminar held in English: “From memory of places to the pedagogy of remembrance.” The event was addresses to the leaders of educational projects. The seminar’s participants included the representatives of various cultural institutions from the Netherlands, Slovakia, Germany, and Poland.
The training courses at the Museum were of great interest to guides and educators from Poland and other countries. During the whole-day stay, the trainees had an opportunity to attend a tour with the curator, discover the details of the permanent exhibition, and listen to the lecture on the archaeological research conducted on the area of the former death camp.
In 2021, we also continued regular meetings in the senior club “Czas” under the auspices of the regional branch of the Polish Red Cross in Włodawa, during which seniors were learning about the local history. An additional and complementary element of the activities addressed to the people affected by disabilities and exclusion was the cooperation with a county centre “Przystań” in Włodawa. Residents of the centre frequently visited the Sobibór Memorial and participated in various commemorative events and celebrations. In 2021, the Museum and Memorial in Sobibór was visited by nearly 40,000 visitors from Poland and from abroad.
