“FROM MEMORY OF PLACES TO THE PEDAGOGY OF REMEMBRANCE” – METHODOLOGICAL SEMINAR IN THE MUSEUM AND MEMORIAL IN SOBIBÓR
This week, a seminar organised at the Museum and Memorial in Sobibór came to an end. The meeting of representatives of many museums and cultural institutions from all across Poland was an excellent opportunity to share experiences on extracurricular historical education and activities promoting various aspects of history. The event was held as part of the 80th anniversary of operation “Reinhardt” organised by the State Museum at Majdanek.
The participants of the seminar laid flowers at the mound with mass graves and paid tribute to the victims murdered in the SS-Sonderkommando Sobibor extermination camp. Afterwards, the exhibition curator, Tomasz Kranz gave a guided tour additionally describing the background of the exposition’s creation process. It constituted the starting point for the discussion on contemporary forms of preserving memory and characteristics of the functioning of martyrological museums.
The following days were devoted to group work when the participants prepared various workshops ideas and activities related to particular aspects of the Holocaust, based on the exhibition and space of the former Sobibór camp.
A special element that concluded the seminar included discovering the diverse heritage of Włodawa and its surroundings – a place where many cultures and beliefs have been overlapping for centuries, and where a large Jewish community lived before World War II.
